CLIENTS:2:1 DetroitJeffrey WilliamsGregory HolmCOLLABORATORS:Jono SturtCharlie Veneklase Lauren ShirleyFire House Detroit is a continuation of the dialogue that began with the symbolic Ice House Detroit, which focused an international lens on the city’s neglected neighborhoods and the national housing crisis. This year’s installation will become a nexus for partnerships with cultural institutions, neighborhood advocacy groups, and the talented young people of Detroit.Through the repurposing of a historic Fire House, Engine Company #4 will become the location for staging a live event where by contemporary artists andcomposers will engage with Detroit’s inner city youth in a truly collaborative way. As a point of engagement, we have received submissions from the Street Poets Society on broad themes: their perceptions of Detroit, their individual aspirations, and their hopes for the future of the city in which they live. Furthermore, these writings have been transposed into lyrical content for modern compositions, which will be performed by the Detroit Children’s Choir. In addition to this collaboration 2:1 will be transforming the façade of this historic structure into a resonant musical instrument. This PYROPHONE is similar to a pipe organ that uses a single, small, precisely controlled flame, that when projected into glass tubes produces a beautiful, sustained tone. The temperature difference between the flame and the glass tube causes the air to oscillate, which is perceived as sound.

Exotic Aquatics
+AbstractWith the imminent breach of Asian carp into the Great Lakes and the introduction of nearly 40 aquatic exotics into water since the early 1980’s, invasive species research has begun to receive increased federal funding. In order to combat a trend which threatens the Lakes’ $7 billion combined sport and commercial fishing industry, regulatory outposts are deployed within Areas of Concern - instituting regulatory ballast testing of all commercial vessels on Lake Erie. Upon discovery of a breach of Silver carp at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River in Port Cleveland Ohio, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission chooses to quarantine a significant body of water; dramatically reconfiguring the port economies and cultural practices within its extents. As the newly ‘Quarantined Zone’ grows saturated with invasive species, an Outer Harbor emerges as a lucrative offshore urbanism at the QZ’s perimeter. Ecological threat shifts to economic asset. Opportunistic industries and curious alliances achieve spectacle tourism status within a plastic boundary condition. This thesis choreographs an anticipatory narrative within the context of the Enormous: seemingly disparate trans-geographic forces that implicate territories, architectures, and objects. An invasivore restaurant, carp processing center, and charter vessel capitalize on the endemic status of ecological disasters, locating partnerships between scientific/commercial/recreational constituencies, and indulging in the ambiguous tension between capitalist and conservationist agendas.

Fiber reinforced concrete prepared for pouring. Concrete was sculpted to reinforce weaker moments in the shell's composition. Seams were used as access for additional lifts, and plywood disks clamped to the membrane aid in control of thickness, reducing the shell's thermal mass. After the concrete hardened sufficiently, the tension cables were released and formwork was removed easily with utility knife.

COLLABORATORS:Chris HolzwartKelly RaczkowskiUNIVERISTY OF MICHGANDigital Fabrication 2Option StudioWes MageeDavid PigramWinter 2010Detroit currently exists as a food desert. However, many constituents and local entrepreneurs are acting on research suggesting that Detroit is ripe for transformation through urban farming. Re-Market develops a speciated and emergent architecture that leverages current urban agricultural initiatives in order to reshape Detroit's food infrastructure.Re-Market seeks to catalyze and promote an agricultural infrastructure. By coupling existing initiatives within emergent enclaves of the city, the project examines three scales of deployment which employ educative models, cultural events, and spectacle as facilitators of positive change.

COLLABORATORw/ Diana TomovaUNIVERSITY OF MICHIGANPerimeter StudioGlenn WilcoxFall 2010The Recreation Center for Detroit is embedded within a undulating mega-surface, formed from a set of performative and programmatic logics. The structure thickens increases and aperture decreases as the surface meets the ground, and the undulations allow for double height programs to exist within the form. A public run/walk/bike concourse weaves between playing fields and fitness pavilions, connecting the project to Detroits emerging Riverwalk, and the greater context of the city. The inhabitable roof-scape is accessed via the low points of the form, and is a blend of landscape and hardscape.

COLLABORATORS:Paul TiermanNick RebeckUNIVERSITY OF MICHIGANDigital Fabrication 1Maceij KaczynskiFall 2010RESEARCH TRAJECTORY:A library of plywood bending tests was created with the variables of routing depth, frequency and spacing relative to the grain orientation of the material. Once cut to a specific shape and a selected CNC routing pattern, the plywood need soak only for one hour be fore it yielded a highly calibrated bent shape. The material is then nailed tightly to a drying board to set the shape. An aggregation of panels was created based on a 3-D ruled surface form. WetWall is a research trajectory and fabrication process that allows us to create a complex panelized wall system using the properties of the material while requiring little on-site equipment for fabrication.

UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGANPerimeter StudioTsz Yan NgMalcolm McCulloughFall 2011Charged with both designing a constructon set and to fabricate a screen, I became interested in reflection and point of view. Swivel is crafted with 127 components of 20-gauge waterjet cut steel - sand blasted, and finished with lacquer. The design - composed in grasshopper - emphasizes the materials ability to reflect and redirect light, relies on efficiencey of production and assembly, and utilizes its bending properties to create a dynamic composition. The subtle rotation of the screens interior components seem to spin as one circulates around it; light and shadow effects change with time of day and positioning.

BOSTON ARCHITECTURE COLLEGEUrban DesignBuild StudioKyle Sturgeon, DirectorCharles Garcia, Co-InstructorSpring 2008STUDENTS:Wes Baumgartner, Janine Croke, Lisa Gomes, Rebecca Grace, Andrew PaineCLIENTS:United Neighbors of Lower RoxburySouth End/Lower Roxbury Open Space Land Trust (SELROSLT)This is the first completed project of the ongoing designBUILD studio I established at the Boston Architectural College. Thestudio began with a rigorous contextual analysis as students meet with community members to determine the architectural quality and siting. This culminated in a design selection meeting where three developed designs were presented for selection. During construction, our relationship with the broader community strengthened as we enlisted residents for site work. The Peace Park plays a pivotal role in the life of the local community - used for musical performances, barbecues and other socialgatherings. Students bot designed and contructed an amphitheatre/stage that culdbe packed up when dormant or deployed for communiy events. We conducted ergonomic studies to create contours for concrete benches that adapt to multiple uses. Three benches hold plywood boxes that are used as portable seating or can be assembled onto a stage platform for performances. Overhead canopies are designed to provide shade and double as projection surfaces for film screenings at night.Blog: bacdesignbuild.blogspot.com

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIAVertical DesignBuild StudioJohn Quale, DirectorSpring/Summer 2005ecoMOD is a research and educational project at the University of Virginia, striving to create sustainable, prefab housing units in partnership with affordable housing organizations.ecoMOD1 – the OUTin house is the first two-unit condominium in central Virginia, and was sited in the Fifeville neighborhood of Charlottesville. The data from the monitoring system thus far indicates the high performance structural insulated panels (SIPs) are helping it to outperform a comparable conventional home of the same size by 65 to 70%. OUTin includes energy efficient construction methods and strategies and a landscape of native, drought tolerant plants.Technologies and features include a potable rainwater collection system (the first in the city of Charlottesville), a solar hot water panel, low impact finishes and sustainably forested wood flooring from Virginia. The primary design strategy of the OUTin house is to make the entire site habitable and usable. Rather than a rectangular box without functional outdoor spaces, the OUTin house is placed to merge outside and inside places.CLIENT:Piedmont Housing Alliance** For a fulllistof studets ad volunteers, please visit:http://ecomod.virginia.edu/projects/outin/
