At the Graduate School of Design, my research interests fall into a range of scales and zones: The role of design in complex geopolitical and socioeconomic environments. Infrastructural globalism investigated through scalar relationships of material, energy and waste streams. The role of technologies in delivering architectural experiences, engaging people of diverse needs. Radically passive means for actively engaging climate. Systems thinking.

Landfill Urbanism: Opportunistic Ecologies, Wasted LandscapesAs a child, my father would take my brother and I to the local junk-yard. Wed watch, amazed, as the compressor squashed our waste into a dumpster, then scavenge through piles of scrap metal and climb gigantic wheeled Caterpillar earth-movers. For better or worse, this archetypal junk-yard has given way to massively controlled spaces of waste disposal. Today, continuously increasing demand for material coupled with a culture of disposability, has coincided with heightened policy measures restricting landfill development. We have a crisis of waste management. Meanwhile, as landfilling has grown from a localized phenomenon into a regional set of distribution networks, neo-industrialization is emerging throughout the Great Lakes megaregion, suggesting new opportunities for re-territorialization of wasted landscapes. This project posits that extraction of existing landfill sites for material and energy is inevitable.Landfill Urbanism suggests that the act of landfill mining, a contentious and stinky proposition, has the capacity to foster a localized, robust industrial ecology, while also recasting the publics relationship with our waste through tactical deployment of architecture and urban space-making. Directed Robotic Trash Extractors (DRT-E) exhume and cultivate material, as the projects conveyor-belt infrastructure allows individuals, cooperatives and corporations to safely sort and collect based on their needs: a novel approach to accessing our 21st century resource. By allowing complete engagement with the public, Landfill Urbanism fosters productive interdependent relationships between consumers, as well as offering to its users a series of spectacular didactic, practical, and recreational experiences. Where the public of today consumes, the public of Landfill Urbanism harvests.

Telhado Flor, translated from Portuguese as Roof Flower, speculates as to the possibility of making emergent change within the Favela through the introduction of a self-sustaining wholesale flower business. This pilot project seeks to engage the material realities of the Favela, while challenging norms and proposing innovative form through environmental analysis, with the primary goal of enticing community members to plant roof gardens to supplement their income and increase overall surface permeability. Following pages include environmental analysis, business and urban planning/ phasing, and an architectural proposal for the pilot project. Favela StudioFernando LaraSpring 2009

Lex Mercatoria provided an opportunity to learn to use self-organizing systems and parametric software to reconceptualize the institution of United States Courthouse. Although this theoretic sponge puzzle leaves some loose ends, the project fostered learning the Grasshopper plug-in for Rhinoceros at a fundamental level. It's really all about list management. The project dealt at three scales of influence on the institution of court:1. The System. Consolidate duplication of services, organized within a building in downtown Detroit on an arbitrary urban site.2. The Building.Orchestrate the theatricality of public, secure and restricted spaces within.3. The Courtroom. Allow for the flexibility of changing needs of the syvstem over time.Inorganic Assemblies StudioDavid PigramFall 2009www.supermanoeuvre.com

Theoretical GroundsIn 1266 Marco Polo reached Dadu, present day Beijing, under the rule of Kublai Khan. The stories he brought of the West fascinated Kublai, and his stories of the East have become integral to the Wests conception of the East. In our own way, we too seek to document our explorations as Westerners in the East.Defined by courtyard houses, pool tables, entrepreneurs, construction, demolition, and old ladies making deviled eggs, the definition of an urban village is hardly concise, yet over 500 exist in the greater Beijing metropolitan area. Through Google Earth imagery, this research project has sought out the emergent communities wedged into the cracks of Beijing and imminently being swallowed by its expansion. Many are in the process of demolition to make way for Chinas modernization. Others thrive, secured by locations under power-lines, strong-minded artists or as tourism commodities. The work presented here seeks to document and understand the condition of Beijings emergent communities, to learn from them while exploring Chinas northern capital. Brew FactoryGlenn WilcoxFall 2008ContextSituated near the Exit 17 on Route 23 in Dundee, MI, DaWeissBrau exists as a figurative and literal bridge in a site with a contextual pairing: 23-East [Dundee]: Small town America - one-square downtown next to a bend in the River Raisin [with requisite old mill]. A stop on Hwy 50 between Monroe + Jackson. Historically a farming/ agrarian community with mixed light industry. 23-West [Perimeter]: Cabelas Hunting Super-store has created its own context quite literally - all sites available for use around Exit 17 are owned by Cabelas to promote their agenda. So grab a cold brew and enjoy! RepresentationHow does one design and document the plethora of ideas and decisions required in an architectural proposal? Does the traditional drawing set do justice to the myriad of experiences available, the unique site and environmental strategies enlisted, or the structural scheme considered? Adventures at DaWeissBrau poses a possible solution to the schematic design of an integrated Brewery, Motel and neighborhood Pub, utilizing the graphic novel to illustrate multiple unique experiences through DaWeissBrau. The entire book is shown in thumbnails on the following pages (as displayed at critique), as well as selections at larger scale; the complete graphic novel is available as a free PDF download or $14.50 book from the link below.

While working at Lam Partners I had the privilege of working on a wide variety of projects with numerous architects. I filled many roles at the firm, entering as a design assistant, and working up to larger projects as designer and project manager. Below is a list of projects in which I contributed significant design and/or analytical work. Starred projects have been completed to date, or are in construction. Working as a lighting designer requires a unique skill set - a thorough understanding of architecture, electric lighting technologies and products, an intuitive understanding of the physics and metrics of light, and how the human eye perceives the world around us. The process of designing light has provided me an understanding of design research, making design decisions based on computational analysis, product and technology research as well as the aesthetic and intuitive understanding of the perception of space.

BAC B1 Studio
Over the course of two years, I taught a B1 level architecture studio, TM365 Lighting Design for Interior Designers, and received a grant to begin new lighting coursework at the school. The following pages highlight the work produced for the grant, for the course taught through the grant, and output of materials created for the Certificate in Design Education under instructors Karen Nelson and Tina Blythe. It is within this context that i seek to continue my education as an educator, with the intent to expand my role beyond technical coursework to design teaching and methodology through the studio environment. At the GSD, I was a TA for Grace La and James Dallman's Option Studio, investigating water resources and industry in Milwaukee Wisconsin.
